  •

In the first year of Diesel Service Technician, students complete two courses (each 1 Carnegie unit, earning a total of 2 credits).

    • Fundamentals of Diesel Systems and Components introduces students to shop operations, safety, tools, and vehicle preparation. Students learn the basics of engine repair, including internal combustion engines, valve trains, lubrication, cooling, fuel, air induction, and exhaust systems.

    • Applications of Diesel Electrical/Electronic Systems builds on this knowledge with training in electrical theory, battery systems, starting and charging systems, lighting, gauges, warning devices, and cab/hydraulic system maintenance.

Students also have the opportunity to join SkillsUSA, where they can develop leadership skills and demonstrate technical expertise through competitions.

  • In the second year, students complete two advanced courses (each 1 Carnegie unit, earning a total of 2 credits).

    • Theory of Diesel Engine Performance reviews shop safety and operations while introducing suspension/steering theory, inspection, and repair. Students also study brake systems, including hydraulic brakes, air brakes, and wheel bearings.

    • Advanced Skills of Diesel Auxiliary Components and Systems expands into drivetrain service, HVAC and cooling systems, wheel alignment, tire service, and frame coupling. Students also prepare for ASE Entry-Level Certification testing, giving them an industry-recognized credential that supports career readiness in the diesel and transportation fields.

Students may continue participating in SkillsUSA, gaining real-world experience and showcasing their abilities in leadership and technical competitions
