Welding

-
In the first year of the Welding program, students complete two foundational courses (each 1 Carnegie unit, earning a total of 2 credits).
- Orientation and Cutting (Course Code: 993302) introduces students to the NCCER Core curriculum, focusing on safety, construction math, blueprint reading, welding symbols, hand and power tool use, and safe materials handling. Students also gain hands-on experience with oxyfuel cutting techniques while developing communication, employability, and leadership skills. At the end of this course, students will take the NCCER Core Certification exam.
- Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) (Course Code: 993303) builds on these foundations by teaching safe SMAW practices, electrode selection and handling, equipment setup, and the completion of fillet welds in multiple positions. Upon completion, students are eligible to take the NCCER Welding Level I Certification exam.
Students are also encouraged to join SkillsUSA, where they can strengthen technical and leadership skills while competing in welding-related events.

In the second year, students advance their welding knowledge and techniques through two specialized courses (each 1 Carnegie unit, earning a total of 2 credits).
- Advanced Welding I (Course Code: 993304) emphasizes blueprint interpretation, advanced welding symbols, Plasma Arc Cutting (PAC), Air Carbon Arc Cutting (A-CAC), and SMAW groove welds with backing. Students also practice non-destructive and destructive weld testing. These skills continue building on NCCER Welding Level I modules and prepare students for advanced certifications.
- Advanced Welding II (Course Code: 993306) expands into Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW), and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW). Students refine techniques with multi-pass fillet and groove welds, open-root welds, and alloy welding. By the end of Year 2, students are eligible to take the NCCER Welding Level II Certification exam.
Participation in SkillsUSA gives students additional opportunities to demonstrate their welding expertise, gain leadership experience, and prepare for careers or advanced training in the welding industry.
