Family & Consumer Sciences

  • Contemporary Health develops students’ personal, social, and mental health knowledge and skills. Content includes human growth and development, disease prevention, substance abuse awareness, community and environmental health, safety practices, and basic first aid. This course fulfills the health graduation requirement. (Grades 9–12, 1 quarter, 0.5 Carnegie unit)

  • Child Development emphasizes the physical, social, intellectual, and emotional development of children. Students study parenting considerations, prenatal care, child growth and behavior, exceptional children, and career opportunities related to child development and education. (Grades 9–12, 1 quarter, 0.5 Carnegie unit)

  • Family Dynamics focuses on developing skills related to personal, family, and social responsibility. Students explore adolescent development, family roles and responsibilities, decision-making, and the management of modern family systems. (Grades 9–12, 1 quarter, 0.5 Carnegie unit)

  • Nutrition and Wellness helps students understand the relationship between nutrition, physical activity, and overall wellness. Instruction includes healthy food choices, meal planning and preparation, exercise, and strategies for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. (Grades 9–12, 1 quarter, 0.5 Carnegie unit)

  • Resource Management teaches students how to identify and manage personal and family resources. Topics include financial literacy, budgeting, decision-making, and the impact of economic, social, cultural, and technological factors on individuals and families across the life cycle. (Grades 9–12, 1 quarter, 0.5 Carnegie unit)
