Educator Preparation

Educator Preparation

The Educators Rising logo features a shield and the words 'Educators Rising' and 'Shaping the Future'.

  • In the first year of Educator Preparation, students complete two courses (each 1 Carnegie unit, earning a total of 2 credits).

    • Foundations of an Educator introduces students to the history, theory, and professionalism of education. Students begin building communication and foundational teaching skills while observing real-world classroom practices.

    • Practices of an Educator expands on these foundations by providing opportunities to develop planning, teaching, assessment, and communication strategies. Students observe and practice these skills in various educational settings, applying school-to-career skills gained in the course.

Students also have the opportunity to join Educators Rising, a national student organization that builds leadership skills and prepares students for careers in teaching.

  • In the second year, students complete two advanced courses (each 1 Carnegie unit, earning a total of 2 credits).

    • Applications of an Educator focuses on advanced communication, working with diverse learners, and applying knowledge across subject areas. Students continue observing and practicing classroom skills in authentic educational settings.

    • Progressive Practices of an Educator introduces advanced instructional planning, teaching strategies, assessment methods, and professional learning practices. Students apply these skills through classroom experiences that prepare them for future roles in education.

Year 2 also includes embedded Work-Based Learning (WBL) experiences, where students engage directly with mentor teachers and school-based placements. These authentic experiences allow students to apply classroom knowledge in professional settings, strengthen employability skills, and build connections with educators and community partners

Participation in Educators Rising provides additional opportunities for leadership development, networking, and career-focused competitions.
